"Not only did Diane Schuur's pal Stevie Wonder write a new song for Friends for Schuur, but he also sings and plays one of his patented harmonica solos on it. Wonder and "Finally" join some of Schuur's other long-standing friends, including Stephen Bishop, who guests on his "Red Cab to Manhattan." As is the case with Wonder, Bishop singing something new with Schuur is a refreshing event, with her crystal clear voice at each song's center. Schuur goes one further, flawlessly singing tunes made famous by both Wonder and Bishop, "It Might Be You," from the film Tootsie, and a live take on "I Just Called to Say I Love You," with Herbie Hancock joining her on piano. Schuur coaxes nuances from each tune here by drastically slowing the tempo and allowing her friends on keyboards (including Ray Charles and Dave Grusin) the space to explore the respective melodies. We have here the Complete Sinatra and Jobim Sessions from 1967. This double LP album, published only in Brazil by Roberto Quartin on a very limited edition, has never been released again either on vinyl or CD and contains all the songs played during the legendary Sinatra and Jobim recording sessions.

The US version does not have the tracks Bonita and Sabiá, not included in any of the two previous records featuring Sinatra and Jobim.

This album has the status of a historic document, eagerly sought by Sinatra collectors all around the world. It was a big deal to find a good quality cover to illustrate this rare and out of print album.

"...Um Ser de Luz não deixa de fora praticamente nenhum dos clássicos de Clara. Isso não é de se estranhar. O que pode causar espanto é a relação de artistas escolhidos. Entre veteranos como Elza Soares, Walter Alfaiate e Fafá de Belém, estão talentos revelados há relativamente pouco tempo, como Renato Braz (este em duas canções), Rita Ribeiro, Monica Salmaso e Mariana Bernardes. Se a seleção de intérpretes foi heterodoxa, nos arranjos o fundamentalismo do samba tradicional se fez presente. Mas o mérito desta obra-prima não é só de Teresa – ótima cantora, dona de uma voz doce e suave, sem floreios ou exageros – e do Grupo Semente, mas dos ótimos músicos que os acompanham: Cristina Buarque (coro), Kiko Horta (acordeom), Ovídio, Marcos Esguleba e Paulinho do Pandeiro (percussão), entre outros. Todos muito bem produzidos pelo experiente Paulão 7 Cordas, que também empresta seu violão em algumas faixas.
Nos dois CDs, Teresa passeia por partidos-altos, choros, sambas-canções e sambas-enredos de Paulinho da Viola, relendo com extrema beleza clássicos como Foi Um Rio Que Passou Em Minha Vida, Coração Leviano, Argumento, No Pagode do Vavá, Moema Morenou e músicas não tão conhecidas, como as instrumentais Choro Negro e Inesquecível.
O primeiro CD abre com Meu Mundo É Hoje (Eu Sou Assim) e conta com a presença do conjunto Época de Ouro em Samba do Amor, do próprio Paulinho em Depois de Tanto Amor e da Velha Guarda da Portela em Coisas Banais. O ponto alto é Quando Bate Uma Saudade, em que Teresa divide os vocais com Pedro Miranda. O disco acaba com Foi Um Rio Que Passou em Minha Vida.
Já o segundo CD, que começa com Argumento, traz outras pérolas de Paulinho como Amor À Natureza, Pecado Capital e Para Ver As Meninas, esta com a participação novamente do Época de Ouro. Keith Jarrett's volume in the Impulse Story series makes for wonderful listening since the period he spent at the label -- from 1973 to 1976 -- yielded eight albums, most of them with a working band that included bassist Charlie Haden, saxophonist Dewey Redman, and drummer Paul Motian -- named informally as "the American Quartet." This set contains 11 cuts. The problematic end is that they come from six of the eight recordings, and the lion's share come from just two: Treasure Island and Bop-Be. The cuts were selected by author Ashley Kahn, who wrote the liner notes to each of the CDs in the series. He is the author of -The House That Trane Built; The Impulse Story (in addition to the individual artist titles there is a semi-comprehensive four-disc box set, and a single-disc sampler). Kahn's choosing of these tracks with so much emphasis placed on two albums does cheat the listener of the sheer range expressed on Jarrett's other Impulse recordings. For his debut, Beyond The Wall, Garrett is joined by vibraphone great Bobby Hutcherson and tenor saxophonist legend Pharoah Sanders, whith whom Garrett has been performing over the last year before rapt audiences. Along with bassist Robert Hurst III, pianist Mulgrew Miller, drummer Brian Blade, and percussionist Ruggerio Boccato, they deliver a hypnotic set, recorded in Manhattan and inspired by Garrett's 3-week visit to China in December 2005. Without words, Garrett powerfully recounts a spiritual as well as geographical journey; its contemplative moments are counterbalanced by outbursts of instrumental fire, especially on the climactic "May Peace Be Upon Them", which comes across as both a fervent wish and an anguished cry.

Steve Khan's Green Field is appropriately named: it is a fertile, sweeping plain of musical feeling and insight that fills the listener with both peace and awe. There is something special about the trio of Khan, DeJohnette and Pattitucci that one finds almost nowhere else: the ability of each player to make their own unique mark on the music while at the same time contributing to a cooperative sum greater than the three put together.

Khan has long been a favorite of mine for a couple simple reasons: his melodies are catchy, his solos are articulate and moving, and his sense of rhythm (and accompaniment) provide Bill Evans-like brush strokes that are perfectly appropriate. DeJohnette, as most know, is a master musician whose drumming is like fire and ice--controlled and understated until you come to understand the power that lurks just beneath the graceful surface. Patitucci blends in marvelously--he drives the momentum and provides melodic interest all at the same time.

In my view, Steve Khan is one of the most underrated guitar players in jazz today. He shouldn't be. As this disk will show you, his smart melodies and beautifully architectural improvisations rank with the very best. I highly recommend this disc. It will make you a fan.

This is the third release in a series of improv-based, studio/ live recordings Steve Khan released with bandmates , , and . It has a very similar flow and groove to Eyewitness and ModernTimes, the second release in the trio of Khan's '80s Gibson guitar tone period.

What immediately stands out, notably on "Some Sharks" the Police-esque track and "The Suitcase," are the excellent vocals by Manolo Badrena. On this song and others, he has quite a great time cutting loose, wild-man style, in a heavily reverbed fashion adding a deeper Latin-flavored atmosphere. This instantly causes one to think of ' chord stylings and voicings in Khan's guitar.

Paralleling Khan's masterful guitar work, it is noted by Khan that bass and drumming enthusiasts cite this as the record to get of the trio's '80s releases. Sadly, due to many financial and lack-of-touring issues, this master lineup finally broke up after this release. All the aforementioned Antilles recordings barely saw a U.S. release coming out four years after they were recorded.

El disco In a Silent Way de Miles Davis prefiguró una callada revolución musical cuyas influencias perduran hoy tanto en el jazz como en una inmensa cantidad de estilos o subgéneros. Primero, Davis grabó más de dos horas de una música que, a pesar de estar basada en una composición de Joe Zawinul, era mayormente improvisada, sin melodías convencionales ni marcos armónicos reconocibles. Más tarde, y con la ayuda del productor Teo Macero, cortó, pegó, repitió y editó ese material hasta convertirlo en las dos piezas que conforman el disco En 1998, Bill Laswell, conocido productor y uno de los principales exponentes de la escena vanguardista neoyorquina, creó Panthalassa: The Music of Miles Davis 1969-1974, http://jazzymusic.org/f187/old-post-...halassa-20995/ (Old post Miles Davis - Panthalassa) , recombinando las unidades musicales de In a Silent Way procesadas con tecnología moderna y adosados a otras grabaciones de Davis de aquellos años. En 1999, Laswell realizó una segunda parte de su proyecto, llamada Panthalassa: The Remixes, donde varios disc-jockeys y músicos electrónicos volvían, una vez más, a remezclar los elementos básicos de aquella composición de Miles Davis. Treinta años después de que un saxofonista, dos teclistas, un guitarrista, un bajista y un baterista tocaran sus instrumentos convencionales en un estudio, los sonidos que ellos habían creado como elementos de una obra volvían a combinarse para crear otra composición diferente.

Five Wonderful Stars!! Earl Klugh, the acoustical jazz guitar master, displays most of his musical virtuoso arsenal with this very pleasing and jazzy CD. Covering a wide-range of songs from the TV theme for "Bewitched" to wonderful off-center standards like "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life" and Neal Hefti's "Lonely Girl", he puts on a dazzling display of guitar fingering wizardry. Those who try to relegate Mr Klugh to the "smooth jazz" corner of jazz may be surprised by his hot blazing runs, well-plotted solo arcs, unique arrangements, those magical overtones that hang in the air, and his overall tasteful musicianship. But not those of us who have been enjoying Mr Klugh for many years. Search the musical universe and you'll hear no one else that comes close to his wonderful acoustical sound, fully on display here. And the overall trio performance shows three "melded" minds that understand their musical mission and swing as tightly as anyone out there. Bassist Ralph Armstrong (great thematic arco bass solo on "Night and Day") and drummer Gene Dunlap (check out his 'samba school' tags on "One Note Samba") are superb in support and solo. This is an all-occasion musical experience: listening, driving, partying, or background (but he'll keep distracting you with his runs): it works beautifully on all levels.

My "Pieces De Resistance", the best of the best, begin with a 'latin to 4/4 beat' tempo shifting of "I'll Remember April", a joyous "Days of Wine and Roses", a lovely loping "Love Theme from 'Spartacus'", a great version of "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" at two tempos, and a stupendous tight-swinging "Night and Day" with Klugh adding exciting new flavors to these attractive standards. Most songs come in around the 4 to 5 minute mark and the sound is great. Winners All !!! A sure-fire hit for your personal listening pleasure or as a "can't miss" present for ANY music fan. Earl Klugh is a MARVEL!

One of Grant Green's three great sessions with organist Larry Young and drummer Elvin Jones. Hank Mobley joins the trio for beautiful explorations on "Speak Low" and "Stella By Starlight" as well as two contemporary tunes: "Corcovado" and the title track.

I Want To Hold Your hand is an album by Grant Green that was made because Green wanted to and said that he took the route that Wes Montgomery did, covering pop tunes and gaining more recognition. Sadly, unlike Montgomery, Green didn't have any popular success with these albums, but they make for very nice swinging sets.

This album is truely an album for guitarists to study if they are learning jazz guitar. Listen to his sound and his dexterity. Other than that, this album is far from the greatest album in Green's cataloge.

The opener, I Want To Hold Your Hand is very beautiful. It took me a while to figure out what song it was from hearing it, but that was just because of Green's gift for song interpertation. The song definately sounds like a 1960's Bachelor music hit, but unfortunately it was not. Maybe due to lack of distribution, and it being on a strictly jazz label as where Montgomery's hits were on A&M Records.

As the rather boring, bossa nova craze was sweaping the country it had its ties and impact on jazzers. Corcovado (Quiet Nights) written by who else, but Antonio Carlos Jobim, swings. The best of the rest are Speak Low and Stella By Starlight.

The neat trio consisting of Larry Young on organ, Elvin Jones, (RIP) on drums, and Green on guitar are complimented with Hank Mobley on tenor who dropped by for the session. This is somewhat of a classic, but there is much more by Green to check out. Idle Moments, Street Of Dreams, Green Street, Solid, and many more during his run on Blue Note Records.

The title of this March 1965 session doesn't exactly inspire thoughts of collective interplay. And, sure enough, the music within is dreadfully dull. The third of four collaborations between guitarist Grant Green and organist Larry Young, I Want To Hold Your Hand, was also the last Blue Note record the guitarist made until 1969's Carryin' On (which initiated a three-year spate of rather dull pop- funk). The arrangements are bland at best; ignited only by the inventive cues drummer Elvin Jones interjects. Young, a helluva more brilliant player than this disc allows, comps rather methodically like a hack-pianist in a lounge bar. Hank Mobley sounds positively somnambulant. And Green, who solos meaningfully enough, only comes to life on hi s solos for the standards “Speak Low, “ “Stella By Starlight,” “At Long Last Love” and Steve Allen's corny “This Could Be The Start Of Something Big.” Everyone here has sounded more interesting (and alive) elsewhere. Perhaps Blue Note w ill consider issuing the far more interesting Green-Young collaborations Talkin About (1964) or Street of Dreams (1964). Listeners may want, instead, to check out the more interesting His Majesty King Funk (1965), recorded a mere two months later for Verve, for evidence of how good organist Larry Young and guitarist Grant Green sounded together.
